Rado Watches

Rado is a Swiss watch brand, which is world famous for its impeccable quality watches and all the pioneering work in the watch industry. The company that originally was setup to produce watch parts has come out with its own collection of watches relatively late, but today Rado watches are counted as luxury watch products. Let us look at the brief history, the main characteristics and the availability of Rado watches in South Africa.

Rado Watch Group was founded in 1917 as Schlup & Co. which has become famous for producing watch parts and movements exclusively for its 50 years of functioning and has come out with its first watch collection in 1957. Today Rado is one of the major Swiss watch brands, having over 5000 label stores, retails and points of sale in the world’s 150 countries. Rado watches are the most popular in Japan, China in the Middle East and in Europe. Rado watches have become part of ASUAG in 1968. ASUAG is the watch group that later transformed its name to Swatch Group.

Rado watches were never as traditional in design as the other Swiss luxury watch brands. Rado Watches have always looked for novelty features and outlooks, which is perfectly mirrored in their watches’ collections. Rado watches are famous for being the very first scratchproof watches in the world and this quality is further exposed in several of Rado’s outstanding watch models. Rado is also very famous for its research and developments with regards to finding alternative metals for building watches. The brand produces most of its watches out of tungsten and titanium carbide that both belong to the family of hi-tech ceramics. Rado has created a high tech diamond in 2004, which today is known as the world’s hardest material. Rado works had to create ultra thin fine ceramics in order to create outstanding watches.

The most famous Rado watch is the DiaStar, which was first released in 1962 and it’s the very first scratch-proof watch in the world. DiaStar is still in production under the name of DiaStar the Original.

The V10K is the world’s hardest watch ever, which is also included in the Guinness Book of World Records. The watch got its name for having the Vickers hardness number of 10.000.

Rado watches were never too traditional in their outlook; therefore, they are rather searched by those, who would like a totally unique watch. Rado has collected over 20 different awards for the unique design of its watches. Today, the price of Rado watches is between USD 700 and USD 30.000 depending on the model. The brand offers around 12 different collections.

Rado watches are available in multiple cities of South Africa, as follows:
Port Elizabeth: Greenacres Shopping Mall
Cape Town: Canal Walk, Century City
Durban: Gateway Theatre of Shopping
Johannesburg: Sandton Shopping Mall
Pretoria: Arthur Kaplan at Menlyn Park

Rado watches are popular in South Africa and thanks to their absolutely unique outlooks they are widely worn for their qualities and for being status symbol in the world of watches.
